frederick gorilla
subjects, stories and controversies
The Gorilla is a current events magazine dedicated to business, life and politics. The Gorilla's intent is to evoke discussion among residents about some of the issues ignored by mainstream media.
monthly magazine
I served as the art director for the Gorilla for two years. From day one of aquisition, I began a brand overhaul, including comprehensive style guide to ensure consistency in style and messaging. The magazine included several recurring departments and special features, including a center-spread infographic, top 10 to-dos, and upcoming events. The mantra of the magazine, "beat your chest" was reflected in the gritty style, bright colors and sharp angular design.
The work shown here has won several Addy Awards including Judge's Choice Addy Award.
feature spread
an editorial feature about the changing demographics of frederick county, md and what that means for local elections. This feature won a Gold Addy Award.
Department layouts
recurring departments had a simple, but edgy layout with pop-art references and unconventional colors. the table of contents, shown, featured the cover artist bio, and often an infographic or pull quote.
cover and feature
consistency in theme throughout the entire publication was important to our entire team. often our issues were thematic; focusing heavily on politics during fall months, on, in this issue, on some of the more unique people and pastimes of frederick county.
